Truck Driving School Tips
Trucking School Tip #1- First off I would suggest going to your state testing center and picking up a Truck Driver study book they usually only cost a couple of bucks but it will help you get ahead of the rest of your class when you begin truck driving school. Don't expect to be taught expect to learn. Take notes, ask questions, ask more questions and take more notes.
Trucking School Tip #2- Be prepared to complete applications for trucking jobs while in school. Bring your entire work history, with addresses and phone numbers. You will need to bring a list of at least 3 references not related to you. If you have been employed or had many jobs over the past 5-10 years it will help to bring a 5 year print out from your local Social Security office, Trucking companies are required to do a thorough employment history check and the more information you can provide them the quicker they can give you a response. It is also very important to be honest on your application. Trucking companies are going to research your driving record and your criminal history so be prepared to answer some questions.
Trucking Tip #3- Once you begin truck driving school keep in mind that trucking schools can't actually prepare you for all the factors of being a truck driver. After all there is only so much you can learn in 4-6 weeks. You will more than likely leave after you graduate truck school and wonder "man am I really ready for this". Driving a truck can be a rewarding career however it can also be a very challenging task. You will find many obstacles out there on the road that no CDL School can prepare you to handle. Weather can cause havoc on a professional truck driver, rain, snow and ice are hard enough to handle while driving a passenger vehicle, throw in an extra 14 wheels and and a few extra tons and you can find your self in a major pinch.
Other obstacles you will encounter equipment failure, DOT regulations, and of course soccer moms. Most people haven't got a clue that that those big rigs simple can't stop on a dime. As a truck driver you will have to always keep your guard up out there on the road as you are delivering truck loads of products to our nation. One thing to keep in mind is there is no freight worth your CDL, your trucking career, or you life.
Trucking School Tip #4- While you are attending truck driving school many trucking companies will be sending someone from their company to try to get you to join their company. Don't jump at the first offer you get. Think things through and do a little research about each company before you sign on the dotted line. Remember if it sounds too good to be true it probably is but by all means hear them out for later consideration. Ask these trucking companies to provide you with written information you can look at and review each day after class has ended. One thing to keep in mind is not every company will visit your school so don't limit yourself to the few that make an appearance. There are tons of trucking companies and making the right choice the first time will get your career off to a great start.
Trucking School Tip # 5- You will more than likely make a friend or two while attending truck driver school, however you are attending this school to get your CDL. Keep your after hours socializing to a minimum. Staying up late hanging out with the boys will only cause you problems concentrating the following day and put you behind the rest of the class.
